Become a Paid-Call Firefighter

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED at time of appointment
  • Must possess and maintain a valid class "C" State of California Driver
  • Must be able to respond to alarms within approximately 20 minutes.
  • Previous fire suppression, emergency medical, rescue or prevention
    experience is desirable but not required
  • Must be able to attend biweekly trainings and commit to one 48-hour
    weekend on-call period per month

Additional Requirements:

The successful candidate will pass an oral interview, background
investigation, and a county administered NFPA Firefighters medical examination,
which includes a drug/alcohol screening. The successful candidate must acquire the following
within 12 months of the date of hire (training provided by the department):

  • Emergency Medical Responder or EMT, including CPR
  • Haz-Mat First Responder Operational
  • ICS-200, Basic Incident Command
  • Confined Space Awareness
  • S-190, Basic Wildland Fire Behavior
  • S-130, Wildland Tools and Techniques

Salary and Benefits:

Paid-Call Firefighters are considered at-will, extra help employees by the
County of San Bernardino Fire Department. Positions start at $12.00 per hour, and the county
offers a tax-deferred retirement compensation plan. Paid sick leave is accrued at the rate
of 1 hour for every 30 hours worked.

Please consider the fact that only approximately 15 hours per month of
compensated training and station/equipment maintenance is guaranteed. Any
additional compensated hours will depend on call volume, your availability
to respond to alarms and any additional coverage/training requested by management.
